Affordable classic cars worth a look in 2026 and 2027
By Jon Cosson · Updated October 2026
Affordable classic cars are where most owners start, and the budget, first-classic and good-value lists in the British classic car press keep returning to the same names. This page gathers the cars that at least two separate publications have picked since January 2024, with the reasons each source gives.
This page reports what published experts are saying. It is not financial advice, and no car should be bought as an investment on the strength of a list.
The focus is value and ownership: parts that are easy to find, clubs that know the cars, simple mechanicals and enough survivors to give buyers a choice.
How to use this list
Each pick names the publications that listed it, with the month and year, and links to the original article. The order is not a ranking. Cars with a joncosson.com buyer's guide link straight to it.
Where a source headline quotes a spending limit, this page simply calls it a budget or affordable list. A car appears only if two separate publications tipped it, or one tipped it and a second reputable source confirmed the reason.
Where Mathewsons, the North Yorkshire auction house, has offered the model, the pick gives the number of lots between February 2021 and September 2026, alongside Classic & Sportscar Centre sales since 2006. Treat those figures only as a guide to how often a model comes up for sale, not as a measure of what it is worth.
What makes affordable classic cars cheap to run
The lists rarely agree on a figure, and this page does not give one. They do agree on the running factors that separate a cheap classic from one that becomes expensive to keep.
Parts availability comes first. Practical Classics singled out parts support for the Mini, Morris Minor and MGB in its 2024 Top 100 Classics vote, and Octane praised the large aftermarket behind the Beetle and MX-5. Survival numbers matter too: Classics World noted that more than 21 million Beetles were built, while Practical Classics said the Vauxhall Viva HC survives in small numbers, which makes missing parts harder to replace.
Club support and simple maintenance run through nearly every list. The Triumph Herald's forward-hinging bonnet, the A-Series engine shared across BMC cars and the air-cooled Beetle engine are all cited as reasons a first-time owner can do routine jobs at home.
Insurance is the next factor. Hagerty UK's April 2026 study of classics for young drivers weighed insurance alongside parts, fuel and tax, and classic policy terms such as mileage limits vary, so get quotes before you buy.
Then there is tax. According to gov.uk, if a vehicle was built before 1 January 1986 you can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2026, and a vehicle with an unknown build date qualifies if it was registered before 8 January 1986. You must apply, and commercial use is excluded. Gov.uk also says a vehicle built or first registered more than 40 years ago does not need an MOT unless it has been substantially changed, though it must be kept roadworthy. Several picks straddle the cut-off, so check https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles for the car you are viewing.

Questions people ask
What are the best affordable classic cars in the UK?
The cars named most often on UK budget and first-classic lists since 2024 are the MGB, Volkswagen Beetle, Triumph Herald, Morris Minor, Mazda MX-5 and classic Mini. The sources point to the same strengths: good parts supply, strong clubs and simple mechanicals.
What is the best first classic car?
There is no single answer. Octane's 2026 first-time list includes the Beetle, 2CV, Morris Minor, MGB, MX-5, BMW E30 and Triumph Herald, while Hagerty UK's April 2026 study for young drivers ranked the Mk2 Golf first. Pick one you will enjoy using that has a strong club behind it.
Which cheap classic cars in the UK are easiest to maintain?
The sources single out simple, widely shared mechanicals: the Triumph Herald's forward-hinging bonnet, the A-Series engine in the Midget, Minor and Frogeye Sprite, the air-cooled Beetle and the 2CV's flat-twin.
Are classic cars exempt from road tax?
According to gov.uk, a vehicle built before 1 January 1986 can stop paying vehicle tax from 1 April 2026. You must apply, and commercial use is excluded. Check https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles for the current rules.
Do classic cars need an MOT?
Gov.uk says a vehicle built or first registered more than 40 years ago does not need an MOT unless it has been substantially changed, for example with a replacement chassis, body, axles or engine that changes how it works. It must still be kept roadworthy.
Is classic car insurance cheaper?
It depends on the car, the driver and the policy. Specialist classic policies are widely available, and terms such as mileage limits and agreed values vary, so get a quote on the exact model before you buy.
Where can I find bargain classic cars for sale?
Dealers, club classifieds, private sales and auctions all turn up affordable classics. Mathewsons in North Yorkshire regularly offers the more common models on this page, and the bidding strategy guide on thorntonledale.org explains how to prepare for an auction.
Should I buy an affordable classic to make money?
This page does not give financial advice. It reports what published lists say about value and ownership. Buy a classic because you want to own and use it.
